Single hospital facing staff shortage, department sleeping

JAMMU, Aug 9: The state government has claimed to provide every possible facility to the common masses, but these claims seem hallow when it comes to the Ayurvedic sector of the health department of the state.
According to sources there is only one Government Ayurvedic Hospital located in Jammu in the state which lacks adequate number of staff. There are about eight sanctioned post of medical staff included one Medical Superintendent (MS), one Physician A-Grade, two Physician B-Grade, and 4 Medical officer in which only five are appointed whereas the post of Medical Superintendent is vacant from the past about 3 years and the higher authorities has placed a incharge
Medical Superintendent on the post.
Beside this the higher officials has posted their blue eyed people on the other posts instead of qualified persons for the posts.
Sources disclosed there are about 417 Ayurvedic and Unani dispensaries in the two regions of the state in which 240 are in Jammu region whereas 170 are in Kashmir.
They further said that all the dispensaries are functioning without required staff, besides this there are 95 more dispensaries in which there is only one doctor in each dispensary who are doing all the work.
Sources maintained that in the other dispensaries on the demands the department withdraws the employee of from one dispensary to other and vice-versa.
“About 2 to 3 years back the Union Minister for Health and Medical Services, Gulam Nabi Azad also sanctioned a Government Ayurvedic College to train the youth for the profession as there are some private ayurvedic colleges, but no government college” they added.
“The minister also approved 20 crore rupees for the said project and directed the concerned department to complete the work with the time duration of 18 months.
The department has also identified the location for the establishment of the college at Veerpur, but now the Minister for Health Services, Sham Lal Sharma rejected the location and shifted it to Akhnoor.
“However the work of the construction of college still not start reason best known to the higher authorities” said a source.
Director of Ayurvedic and Unani Services Dr Abdul Karim Dar could not be contacted even after repeating attempts.
