Literacy in J&K reaches new high: 65.67 per cent

JAMMU, Sept 13: There is some good news for the state; the literacy rate in J&K has touched a new high as it has increased to 65.67 per cent. 

According to the latest survey conducted by Directorate of Economics and Statistics it has shown growth of 10.17 per cent in past eight years since the last census conducted in 2001, when the literacy rate in the state was 55 per cent.
 

Officials said that under the survey the Field Sample Survey (FSS) was conducted in both rural and urban areas falling in all the 22 districts which include 8 new districts. Official said, “The finding will help the state government to formulate new policies and plans as far as education sector is concerned”. He said that it is good for the state as the increase in the literacy rate will further boost the human index ratios.
 

Literacy rate in the state was mere 26.67 in 1981 census and increase to 65.67 per cent is very important for the state which had invested heavily in expansion of educational infrastructure.


However data says that despite gap of 16.19 per cent between males and females (73.30 per cent males and 57.11 per cent females), the literacy rate of the State has registered an annual growth rate of 2.126 per cent besides an annual average growth in the overall population by 1.81 per cent.
 


According to the survey, Jammu, Samba, Srinagar and Leh are highly concentrated literate districts with average literacy levels above 71 per cent. While highly illiterate districts of the State are Rajouri, Kupwara, Budgam and Ganderbal literacy level are at 51.63 per cent.

According to the officials, although state government has invested heavily on the education sector in past decade, but the credit for the increase largely goes to the people and the interest show by them to give best possible education to their children despite militancy of past two decades.
 


The highest literate district (Male-Female) in the state is Jammu with 83.06 per cent, while the lowest being the Rajouri, with 47.37 per cent. Other districts include, Doda, 64.53 percent, Kathua, 70.47 per cent, Kishtwar, 62.43 per cent, Poonch, 60.74 per cent, Ramban 66.58 per cent, Reasi, 60.70 per cent, Samba 82.59 per cent, Udhampur, 69. 75 per cent, Leh 71.05 per cent and Kargil 60.70 per cent. 

In Kashmir valley, the figures include, Anantnag, 66.69 per cent, Pulwama 63.39, Srinagar 77.94, Kupwara, 49.84, Bandipur 55.48, Ganderbal 55.08, Kulgam 56. Shopian 67.63 per cent.
